A little black girl from Jackson, Mississippi; daughter of a southern black minister; born the fourth of six children and one adopted sister; who grew up during the turbulent 50's and 60's at a time when the culture and climate of this great nation that was birth from the concept of "freedom", refused to honor that commitment of liberty for all. I want the people who read this memoir to reflect about their own lives; about how they can effect change, about how they won't become a part of the problem, rather reconciled to making a difference in a positive way. I want them to see themselves as branches on a mighty oak tree-invaluable, multipurpose, never changing, durable, tough symbols of strength. It is only through this context we can truly emerge as a nation of freedom for all. This book is about how my life experiences good or bad shaped me to be who I am today. It is an emotional journey as I struggled to find myself. Navigating through my feelings, thoughts, preferences, desires, needs, appearances or friendships that were often trivialized by those whom I cared about or loved. I faced many disappointments, psychological and physical obstructions, but I never succumbed to the would be "evildoers" who wanted to construct my relationship with the world for their own gratification. I refused to be bound as I realized what I had to offer to the world, but most importantly a legacy for my daughter and my grandchildren.

This is a book that I could not put down until I finished it's entirety. A strong spiritual family and their struggle to get an education. I could relate to Montie's life down south. Her determination to continue on despite the molestation and getting pregnant at a young age. Her courageous struggle and her accomplishments are endless. What a brave soul to share so many intimate details with her readers.Product details

This is a great story of struggle and perseverance. Not only is it detailed but it is also a look into the life and story of African Americans in the south. It is very well written and can easily be made into a movie!
